Unpicking social work practice skills: Warmth and respect in practice

Warmth and respect are considered essential skills for relationship building in social work. However, these often treated as common sense, how to be respectful warm, particularly challenging situations, remains unclear. Practice guidance is commonly given a list of generic behaviours or vague directions. Furthermore, it not clear being warm leads effective relationships. In this article, we applied conversation analysis examine transcripts video recordings 12 sessions ‘Moving Forward: Making Changes’, the national groupwork programme addressing sexual offending Scotland, outline specify interactional practices that constitute instances warmth work practice. We found practitioners demonstrated by recognising acknowledging clients’ accounts identities interaction through subtle discursive practices. These include using hedging words phrases (e.g. sort of, maybe), framing challenges questions suggestions rather than declarations, therapeutic phrasing (i.e. ‘I’m curious about’, I’m wondering’). As such, propose actions demonstrating achieved ways delicately manage issues epistemic authority, is, person’s primary rights knowledge about themselves, face, self-presentation.
